The DAWANG Vision

Written by Julia Lin.

If our clothes could talk, they would say “you look great, powerful, cool today.” They’d also say, “we have a whole lot of history.” If DAWANG could talk, we’d say “let’s look to the future.”

So, let’s do it.

The future we see is blue and orange, it’s cultural fusion, it’s fresh and bright, it’s worth celebrating. And it’s straight from our studio in New York to you, wherever you are.

We find each other online, these days, so that’s where we want to hang with you. Hey! We’re DAWANG. Welcome to our blog. We’re a streetwear brand celebrating a modern interpretation of traditional Chinese aesthetics. We do textiles and trousers, silks and sweater vests, and rompers that make people realize the playfulness and power of Chinese fashion. And we’re really excited for what’s to come.

After recent increases of anti-Asian hate — which, really, are only a more explicit example of the racism our people and other communities of color have experienced for decades — we see the importance of telling our stories and starting conversations. And, for us, this happens through fashion. But it’s not just about the clothes. It’s about what we can learn from the stories behind the clothes, and the people who wear them. It’s time for us not only to be seen, but also to be heard.

We are breaking out of stereotypes not only about what Chinese fashion is and should be, but of what Chinese women and designers can and will do. We are transforming the traditional. We are bringing our voices and visions not just to the runway, but to the streets, where we find people with the same passion and stories that we aim to share through our clothes.

In 2022, the year of the tiger, we are leaning into strength, confidence and conversation. We are opening up space to learn, discuss and grow — because there isn’t one set answer or one perfect perspective, and the greatest way for us to understand each other is to listen to each other. This year, the DAWANG Blog is coming to life for a new series featuring articles, stories and interviews on the role and power of Chinese fashion, culture and creators and its intersection with identity, society and more.

We’ll be diving into the history of the qipao, the representation of Asian culture in media and actions that can be taken to fight back against Asian hate. We’re opening up a space where people can chime in and speak on their own experiences, can learn and engage, and can come together and celebrate.

To a new year and new perspectives!

Hello! I am absolutely blown away by the creation of this brand and how the brand is venturing out to bring out the best of the Asian culture! I would love to know more about how the designer came up with the different ideas of mixing traditional and morphing it into modern clothing. Moreover, I would love to know more about how the name for the brand DAWANG came about! As a Chinese, I understand the meaning 大王 (DAWANG) which is King (or Emperor), but I would like to know about the inspirations behind the name of the brand! I am so excited for the brand to grow and seeing more beautiful pieces the brand creates that is inspired by the traditional Chinese culture!
